In accordance with our Group Sustainability Policy, AEP Nusantara Plantations does not develop on any peat land regardless of depth. There has been no new planting on our peat landbank since June 2019, demonstrating our commitment to preserving these vital carbon sinks.
As part of our comprehensive sustainability strategy, AEP has maintained a strict moratorium on new peatland development since June 2019. This commitment applies to all peat lands regardless of depth, ensuring protection of these sensitive ecosystems and their significant carbon storage capacity.
Our operations in existing peat areas are strictly governed by comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for peat management. These guidelines incorporate all relevant Indonesian regulations, including:
Guidelines for Peat Land Utilization for Oil Palm Cultivation
Moratorium on New Permits for Primary Forests and Peatlands
Additional regulations covering plantation cultivation, pesticide registration, and general plantation business
Proper water management is critical for peatland conservation. Our sophisticated drainage system comprises main, collection, subsidiary, and outlet drains, all carefully designed for optimal water conservation and soil preservation. We prioritize maintaining appropriate water levels to prevent peat oxidation and degradation.
Peat subsidence monitoring receives major priority in our operations, with systematic measurements conducted every six months. This regular monitoring allows us to track changes, implement corrective measures, and prevent long-term degradation of peat ecosystems.
Fire and flood risks are given major consideration in peat areas, with specific management strategies implemented to mitigate these threats while maintaining ecosystem health.
Preserving peat's natural carbon storage capacity
Maintaining natural hydrological functions
Reducing fire and flood risks in peat areas
Strict moratorium since June 2019
Precision water gate and drainage systems
Bi-annual monitoring and documentation
Specialized protocols for peat fire risks
